In 2004 guitarist Ivan
Tucakov (eevan tutsakov) formed the collective
Tambura Rasa with his good friend tabla player Tarun
Nayar. Their musical relationship had initially been
a duo setting, merging Tarun’s Indian Classical
Music knowledge with Ivan’s Balkan and Iberian
influences.
Throughout
the years and after joining forces with numerous
ethnic musicians and dancers, Tambura Rasa’s act has
developed into a diverse and unique style of
gypsy-world-fusion. Some of the continuing members
of the band include violinist Jaron Freeman-Fox,
bass player John Bews and multi-percussionist Mike
Michalkow.
With two CDs ‘Sunrise on a
New World’ (2004) and ‘Viaje’ (2006) as well as over
a dozen styles to pull from, Tambura Rasa bring us a
rich, multicultural blend of contemporary grooves
and traditional rhythms. In their regularly sold-out
live acts and a solid fan base, Tambura Rasa weaves
a tapestry of lively danceable melodies, complete
with belly dancers and fiery flamenco.
As their songs gain
national broadcast and climb up world music charts,
Ivan Tucakov and Tambura Rasa continue to perform as
well as compose new material. Their continuous goal
is to unite music and cultures, which keep evolving
into newer artistic forms.
