“The Kootenay Grass
Company has the special ability to take bluegrass
music in exciting directions without losing sight of
the music’s roots. Brie’s beautiful vocals and
soaring fiddle playing make a great balance to Rob’s
dexterous mandolin playing and Matt and Jeff’s
driving rhythm. The result is a band that is both
fun to dance to and great to watch”

Born from porch pickin’
parties in the mountains of the West Kootenays, The
Kootenay Grass Company has become one of Canada’s
finest upcoming string bands. After 6 years
together, their music has evolved into an eclectic
mix of bluegrass, Celtic, country and original
compositions influenced by diverse artists such as
Bill Monroe, Jenny Whiteley, Nickel Creek, David
Grisman and Jerry Garcia. Their style isn’t quite
bluegrass; it’s Kootenaygrass, a driving, soulful
show that gets people onto the dance floor.
The Kootenay Grass Company is
Brie Faulks, Fiddle/Vocals, Matt Mint, Guitar, Rob
Murray, Mandolin and Jeff Urbanski, upright bass.
Brie, a classically trained violinist, instantly
sets the tone with her powerful, expressive voice
and her blistering fiddle playing. Not to be
outdone, Rob plays counterpoint to Brie, then shines
as he steps to the front of the stage with a
blistering solo. At the heart of the band, Jeff and
Matt hold down the rhythm rock solid. Their forceful
beat can be felt in the heart as your feet drag you
up to dance.
The Kootenay Grass Company has
performed at music festivals throughout the southern
interior of BC including Kaslo Jazzfest, Starbelly
Jam, and Littlefest and has shared the bill with
internationally acclaimed string bands such as The
Creaking Tree String Quartet. They have enjoyed
provincial airplay with their most recent recording,
Road to Whitehorse, and this year will be bringing
their unique brand of handmade acoustic music to the
rest of Western Canada and beyond.
“Watching and
listening to this band grow through the years has
been a joy within itself. The very talented foursome
is so energetic that it’s contagious to listeners. I
look forward to many more years of Kootenay Grass
Company’s music.”
